I Eat the Stars
I Eat the Stars will manifest Fujiwara’s research into complexity theory which states that everything in the universe is in constant change. Complexity occurs in conditions of openness, diversity and reflexive relationships, and its characteristics; systemic, patterned, path dependent punctuated, paradoxical, emergent and changing, are continuously present in the universe, in the world we live in, and even within our own bodies. Science has come to embrace these ideas relatively recently, while Daoists, in their wisdom, figured this out 2,500 years ago. These principles are also actively found within creative process, improvisation and choreography.
Before the pandemic, Laurel MacDonald began writing and recording a cycle of songs using the poetry of Canadian astronomer, Rebecca Elson. Astronomers understand and apply complexity theory to their observations and theories of the universe, and Elson urged them, and all of us to “honour our responsibility to awe”. Elson died tragically young, at the age of 39.
The choreography, music, scenography, multimedia will continue to be developed over the next 2 years. The work will include multimedia projections and be performed by a cast of 5 dancers and live music. Studio showings and Critical Response Process sessions will be held to cultivate useful feedback in support of the work’s development and successful completion. We are looking for partners to premiere this work in 2026/2027.
